At least 10 people were buried in an avalanche near the Austrian mountain villages of Lech and Zurs on Sunday, according to a statement from the state-run Austrian Press Agency.

The avalanche occurred on Sunday afternoon at the village’s open-air ski slope.

Police have so far rescued one person, the agency said.

“Ten winter sports enthusiasts” were buried, according to the statement.

A search and rescue operation is underway involving more than 100 people, including avalanche search dogs and helicopters.

“We are doing everything we can to save winter sports enthusiasts,” a spokesman for the city of Lech said, according to the Austrian News Agency. “The use of searchlights is requested so that the search can continue in the dark,” the statement said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
