San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has nothing to do with spoiling Tom Brady’s return in the 2022 NFL draft following Sunday’s 35-7 rout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from Mr.
Purdy, 22, beat Brady for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Purdy also added a rushing touchdown. His family witnessed his first start at Levi’s Stadium, and a FOX broadcast showed Purdy’s father getting emotional after his first touchdown pass.
Purdy was selected last overall in this year’s Iowa State draft, earning himself the nickname “Mr. Mister.” It doesn’t matter,” but last week’s game against the Miami Dolphins was embroiled in a fight after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot.
After the game, Purdy called it “surreal” to be in the same game as Brady.
“Just standing there, like, ‘Man, that’s Tom Brady,’ talking to the guys, dressing them up and all that,” Purdy told reporters with a big smile on his face.
“It was cool to have him respect what I did today, I’m not going to lie. As a kid, all these years watching that guy kill it, win the Super Bowl, and then even be able to give him a high five or whatever at the end What, I think it’s pretty cool.”
Purdy also mentioned the importance of having his family there and their never-ending support.
“Throughout my life, the ups and downs playing quarterback in high school and college, they’re family, they only believe in you, they always see the best in you. When I was the last pick Then they believed me.”
Brady struggled to find his rhythm, finishing with 253 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Brady, 45, praised Purdy’s performance after the game, saying he played “very well.”
“Took a lot of good shots,” Brady told reporters. “Perseverance in the blitz, they did a good job, they did a really good job.”
Brady, of San Mateo, Calif., also had his family in attendance Sunday, but added that he hopes the team does better.
“Like everybody’s here,” Brady said. “It’s nice to have my family close by. I think they’ve got a lot of people close by coming. Unfortunately, it’s not going to change the outcome of the game.”
FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews said before kickoff that Brady asked for 100 tickets for Sunday’s game for friends and family.
The 49ers are 9-4 while the Buccaneers are down to 6-7 on the season.
San Francisco has a quick turnaround as they plan to travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks on Thursday night. Tampa hosts the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.
