Crews removed a lamp post from a Boston bridge on Tuesday after a woman was struck by a falling utility pole while crossing the bridge in the Seaport District, an incident first reported by 5 Investigates. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on the Evelyn Moakley Bridge connecting Atlantic Avenue to Sleeper Street. A source told 5 Investigates that the woman was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Police said the injuries were not life-threatening. Shortly after 9.30pm, a city spokesperson informed News Centre 5 that a light pole had struck a pedestrian on the Evelyn Moakley Bridge. There has been no update on the woman, who police say is in her 30s. Photos of the scene taken earlier in the day, obtained by Karen Anderson of 5 Investigates, showed a lamp post lying across the sidewalk on the bridge side. Another photo shows the apparent deterioration of the base of another lamp post on the bridge. “Totally surprised because you walk and assume everything is fine,” said John Janigian, who regularly walks Evelyn’s Mokley Bridge. “Never really noticed it. Of course, I didn’t look closely, but definitely didn’t expect something like this to happen.” Boston police tweeted shortly after 4:50 p.m. Sidewalks have been closed to pedestrian traffic in both directions, but they have reopened. When Shaun Chaiyabhat of UNIC 5 arrived at the scene, he found that the staff were removing the lamp post on the bridge. In a statement shared with WCVB shortly before 9 p.m., a city spokesperson said Boston Public Works crews responded to the scene immediately and were inspecting the site to assess the safety of all street poles. “The City of Boston puts the safety of its residents and visitors first, and out of an abundance of caution, sidewalks and bike lanes have been closed and vehicular traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction,” the spokesperson said in a statement. Evelyn Mockley Bridge, named after the late wife of former MP Joe Mockley, first opened in 1996 shortly after her death.
