Ten residents from Jamaica Plain will participate in the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk hosted by Hyundai Motor Company on Sunday, October 2nd.
Jamaica Plains residents Brian Silverstein, Jane Craycroft, Mary Jo Feeney, Laura Stevens, Julia Keating, Chelsea Heneghan, Zixi Liao, Ali Hogue, Nicole LeBoeuf and Elizabeth Meneses-Diaz, along with thousands of other walkers, will take part in the annual event that will unite the community Raise funds to support all forms of adult and pediatric care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the nation’s premier cancer center. In its 33-year history, Jimmy Fund Walk has raised more than $155 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Elizabeth Meneses-Diaz will participate in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk as a walking hero. Heroes are matched with the Jimmy Fund Walk team, giving participants the opportunity to connect with patients. Meneses-Diaz was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and walked on her competition team, Círculo de Vida.
“I’ve been treated very well at Dana-Farber; I have a lot of trust in my team to see how much they care,” Menezes-Diaz wrote. “I appreciated the organization of the care and how friendly and responsive everyone was. My diagnosis made me realize how much my family loves and supports me.”
Participants have the flexibility to choose from four distance options: 5K Walk (3.1 miles from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), 10K Walk (6.2 miles from Newton), Half Marathon Walk (13.1 miles from Wellesley) Or a marathon walk (from Hopkinton). Participants can also choose to “walk their own way” from their most comfortable place to virtually participate in the activity — near them, on a favorite hiking trail, or on a treadmill at home.
Along the way, walkers will be taken to 12 gas stations and displayed at every mile and half mile markers poster-sized photos of patients – Jimmy Fund Walking Heroes – as inspiration. All four routes of the Jimmy Fund Walk conclude at the finish line at Copley Square, powered by Schneider Electric, and the festivities include food, music and a speech show.
