Republicans Deadlocked Over House Speaker Vote January 5, 2023

Rep. FEC records show that Kevin McCarthy diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds to members of the Republican caucus and is now threatening his run for House Speaker.

Since 2008, McCarthy’s leadership PAC, the Majority Committee PAC, has donated $316,000 to the 17 Republican members who now oppose him.

One of the biggest beneficiaries is also one of McCarthy’s most vocal opponents, Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry, who has received more than $50,000 from McCarthy’s PAC since 2012.

McCarthy has also donated at least $25,000 to Reps. Michael Cloud, Andrew Clyde, Andy Harris and Ralph Norman over the years.

McCarthy’s contributions to rebel membership came through the PAC Majority Committee he led. A leadership PAC is a fundraising tool in addition to a candidate’s primary campaign committee. Prominent members exploit their profiles, using them to raise and distribute extra cash to their allies.

Here are the contributions:

  • Scott Perry: $52,500
  • Andy Harris: $26,000
  • Michael Cloud: $25,000
